Why AI is not the solution for security audits
In this article we will discuss why AI is not the solution for security audits
What this looks like in practice
Security audits are relying for the majority on human interpretation and will so in the near future for the following reasons:
AI doens’t understand your business logic, threat model or what “sensitive” means in a specific environment, it lacks real context. A flaw that’s trivial in one system is catastrophic in another, and that judgement depends on context the model doens’t have.
AI is at its strongest on patterns resembling its training data. True zero-day exploits, creative chained exploits and logic flaws that require adversial imagination will slip past it. Attackers innovate where models mostly rely on data that is known, not aware of the latest innovations and attack surfaces that can can pop-up at any moment.
False positives and false negatives are both dangerous and need attention. AI floods teams with noise that needs triage, and worse, gives false assurance when it reports “clean”. Someone has to judge what’s realand what actually matters.
Business logic vulnerabilities are largely invisible to AI. Abuse of legitimate workflows requires understanding of intent, not just code.
AI can be manipulated and it hallicunates. Prompt injection, poisened inputs lead to wrong outputs that requires verification and validation. Or with other words it is a participant in the attack surface.
Where AI genuinely helps: fast scanning large codebases and configurations, flagging known vulnerability patterns, parsing of logs and correlation of events accross large datasets, automation of repetitive checks, and surface candidate issues a human might miss through it sheer volume. Its scales in a ways people can’t.
Accountability, ethics and compliance needs humans. Sign-off on risk acceptance, regulatory attestation, responsible disclosure and judgement calls for acceptable risk carry legal and moral weight a model can’t hold.
Scarce expertise of security specialists is needed for interpretation, prioritization, novel threats, exploitation validation and human judgement that turns a list of findings in actual assurance. AI finds the candidates, this security specialist decides what’s true, what matters and what to do about it.
